More than one in five cars - or 20.9 per cent - registered in the first three months of this year were for private hire, up from 12 per cent for the same period last year.
This increase was driven by the growing number of rental cars meant for private use, whether for car-sharing services or longer leasing contracts that serve as an alternative to buying a car.
