SINGAPORE – The first six charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) in Tengah estate were launched on Feb 25.

By the end of 2025, residents in the new Housing Board town can expect up to 30 chargers that are suitable for overnight charging across five carparks, and two fast EV chargers at Plantation Plaza, which is the neighbourhood centre serving Tengah.

Excluding those in commercial buildings like shopping malls, there are now 4,750 publicly accessible charging points in Singapore, according to EV-Electric Charging, the subsidiary of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) responsible for EV-charging deployment.

This is up from

more than 3,000 charging points reported in August 2024

Installed at Block 112 Plantation Crescent in Tengah, the six new chargers are rated at 7.4 kilowatt (kW) and priced at 53.2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Filling up an EV like the BYD Atto 3, which has a 60.5kWh battery, will take 9½ hours.

The other HDB carparks in Tengah that will get chargers by the end of 2025 are at blocks 131, 218, 223 and 123.

The two fast chargers that will be located at Plantation Plaza will be rated at 50kW or higher, according to SP Mobility, which is operating the chargers.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor said the launch of the first six EV chargers in Tengah is a “key step in bringing sustainable mobility solutions to the residents”.

“By integrating EV charging infrastructure into Tengah’s eco-town masterplan, we are creating a more accessible and convenient environment for EV adoption and enabling residents to embrace a greener lifestyle,” said Dr Khor, who is MP for Hong Kah North.

Mr S. Harsha, managing director for sustainable energy solutions at SP Group, said the deployment of EV charging infrastructure in the 18 Tengah precincts is aligned with the estate’s growth.

“With EV charging easily accessible, we aim to accelerate EV adoption in Tengah and across Singapore, reinforcing our commitment to a connected, efficient, and sustainable transport landscape,” he added.

Before the six new chargers were launched, the charging points nearest to the Tengah area were in neighbouring estates like Bukit Batok and Jurong East, according to the charging network map on LTA’s MyTransport app.

Tengah resident Samuel Ong, 39, who drives a Tesla Model 3 EV, said charger deployment should have been quicker, noting that there are already 10 to 15 EVs in the carpark that he uses.

The management consultant, who moved into Tengah at the end of January 2024, currently relies on Tesla-specific EV chargers located in shopping malls, as well as a charger at his parent’s landed home in nearby Jurong West, installed for his charging needs.

He is unlikely to use the new chargers in Tengah, as doing so would incur hourly parking charges because he does not have season parking at that block. However, he does look forward to the upcoming fast chargers at Plantation Plaza, as they will give EV drivers like him an opportunity to plug in for a quick top-up.

According to LTA, the population of electric passenger cars in Singapore grew from 11,941 units in 2023 to 26,225 in 2024. In January 2025, another 1,029 units were added to the ranks.

Tengah is

Singapore’s first HDB town to be developed in more than 20 years.

Conceived to be an eco-friendly and car-lite town, it incorporates technologies like a centralised cooling system, which is an alternative to conventional air-conditioning, to help reduce residents’ energy bills and carbon footprint.
