Defects found on LRT trains

Cracks on train bodies here appear to be more common than previously thought.

Since hairline cracks on the undercarriages of 26 North-South, East- West MRT and 19 Bukit Panjang LRT trains were made public in July, similar defects have surfaced on 11 Sengkang-Punggol LRT trains.

Operator SBS Transit and the Land Transport Authority revealed the findings promptly yesterday, explaining that an assessor had found the defects not to be "safety critical".

Six of the 11 have had their defective components replaced and returned to service. The other five are expected to be reinstated by the middle of next month. Plans are under way to "redesign, strengthen and replace" the affected components on all Sengkang-Punggol LRT trains.
