SINGAPORE – Owners of Peugeot cars in Singapore will now have to go to Cycle & Carriage for warranty claims and repairs as the former dealer of the French brand has given up its local distributorship.

Vantage Automotive, which has represented Peugeot here since 2000, said it plans to focus on distributing Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand BYD instead, citing the latter’s rising popularity.

Vantage Automotive said it will honour the service packages it sold to Peugeot customers, but warranty claims will be handled exclusively by Cycle & Carriage from Feb 1.

Mr Anthony Teo, managing director of Vantage Automotive, told The Straits Times that affected staff have been redeployed and that the decision to give up the Peugeot distributorship was partly driven by the rapid growth of BYD.

In 2024, the Chinese EV brand grew its sales here by 4,775 units, from 1,416 units in 2023 to 6,191 units.

Vantage Automotive, which is part of Sime Motors, also holds the rights to sell BMW and Ford vehicles in Singapore.

With the new arrangement, Cycle & Carriage will now have another mass-market French car brand in its fold. It currently sells vehicles from Citroen, a distributorship it secured in 2006.

Other brands under the Cycle & Carriage group include Mercedes-Benz, Kia and Smart.

Cycle & Carriage said it will also bring in Leapmotor, its third Chinese brand after Ora and Maxus.

The new showroom housing the Citroen, Peugeot and Leapmotor brands at 239 Alexandra Road will be ready by the second quarter of 2025.

Cycle & Carriage is now renovating a section – or 4,300 sq ft – of its showroom in Alexandra Road to house up to eight vehicles from the Citroen, Peugeot and Leapmotor brands. Renovation is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2025.

Three new sport utility vehicles are in the pipeline for the new space: the five-seater Leapmotor C10, five-seater Citroen C5 Aircross and seven-seater Peugeot 5008.

They will be on display together with the Peugeot 408, a mid-sized saloon that is now on sale through Cycle & Carriage in the other section of its Alexandra Road showroom.

French car brands made up 0.6 per cent of the total new car registrations in 2024 in Singapore.

Citroen sold only EVs here in 2024, while Peugeot sold both combustion engine models and EVs. Combined, the two French brands registered a total of 264 cars in 2024, down from 622 in 2023 and 652 in 2022.

Citroen, Peugeot and Leapmotor are part of Stellantis, an international automotive group that owns 14 brands, including Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Jeep.

Stellantis sells its cars globally through motor dealers like Cycle & Carriage in markets like Singapore and Malaysia.
