SINGAPORE - A trailer burst into flames on the Pan-Island Expressway on Tuesday (June 5), resulting in a build-up of traffic along a 3.5km stretch for more than an hour.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred near the Paya Lebar exit.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which was alerted at about 11am, said that the fire involved the tyre of the trailer.

SCDF officers extinguished the fire using two compressed air foam backpacks and a water jet.

Photos sent to The Straits Times show plumes of black smoke rising into the air from the trailer. Angry, orange flames could be seen burning on the tyres near the rear.

There were no reported injuries, SCDF said.

The Land Transport Authority said in a tweet at about 11.30am that there was an accident on the PIE towards Tuas, before Paya Lebar Road.

In subsequent tweets, LTA said that the accident had led to congestion till Bedok North Road. Motorists were told to avoid the third and fourth lanes.

As at 12.40pm, traffic along the stretch has not cleared.
