SINGAPORE - News about officials in the Japanese town of Fujikawaguchiko taking drastic measures to deter disruptive tourist behaviour has reignited debate about the negative effects of tourism and poor tourist behaviour.

The town near the country’s iconic Mount Fuji put up a mesh barrier to block the view from a popular photo spot – a convenience store with a backdrop of the famous peak in the distance. However, as quickly as a week after the barrier went up on May 21,

holes in the mesh screen began showing up, presumably made by more unruly tourists.
