SINGAPORE – The Toa Payoh warehouse where a unit’s mezzanine floor collapsed
In response to a query from The Straits Times, a BCA spokesperson said: “The partial collapse of the steel platform and racking system did not affect the structural integrity of the building.”
Four people, including two children, were taken to hospital after the incident, which saw three of the people trapped under rugs and storage racks.
The warehouse unit’s tenant is AHT Carpet and Flooring, which had been using the mezzanine floor to store carpets and rugs.
AHT’s founder, Mr Mohammed Hairul, 45, told ST in a phone call that the company had been using the warehouse for over a year.
The mezzanine floor was installed by a vendor in May 2024. Mr Hairul said he was assured by the vendor – whom he declined to name – that the mezzanine floor would be strong enough to store his carpets.
The two adults who were taken to hospital after the incident were Mr Hairul’s friends, one of whom is the mother of the two children who were freed. Mr Hairul himself was not at the warehouse when the collapse happened.
Spokespersons at BCA and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said the two agencies are investigating the incident.
The space – 11 Toa Payoh Industrial Park – is under JTC Corporation.
JTC told ST that it is working with the relevant agencies investigating the incident.
