Growing up in Siglap, Ms Rathi Pala Krishnan, now 44, would sometimes go along with her mother to the hospital where she worked as a medical social worker.

The experience left the Singaporean with an abiding respect for public service. Then a three-week youth mission to Namibia when she was 18 set her on the path to where she is today, as a deputy director in the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner.
