SINGAPORE - Candidates in Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election in February went to great lengths to produce content for social media, hoping it would go viral and raise their profiles.

And now, a story about the Indonesian politicians’

social media push

has raised the profile of one of its writers.

The Straits Times’ Indonesia correspondent

Hariz Baharudin

received the Rising Stars – Young Journalist Award at the Singapore Press Club Awards 2024 on July 13.

The story which he wrote with two colleagues – Indonesia bureau chief

Arlina Arshad

and Indonesia correspondent

Wahyudi Soeriaatmadja

– was one of two cited as examples of Mr Hariz’s “excellent storytelling and impactful journalism”.

“His ability to balance detailed political reporting with human interest stories is a testament to his versatility and talent,” said the Singapore Press Club Awards’ judging panel.

Mr Hariz, 34, said: “This endeavour was not just about reporting; it was about bringing the dynamic and intricate reality of Indonesian democracy closer to our audience.”

The other recipient of the Rising Stars – Young Journalist Award was Mr Matthew Loh, senior breaking news reporter at Business Insider.

SPH Media also won another award.

Ms Wang Yuchen, digital designer at Chinese Media Group Newshub, was one of two recipients of the Rising Stars – Young Digital Journalist Award for her stunning visual storytelling. The other recipient was Ms Gwyneth Cheng, assistant editor at Kontinentalist.

Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Tan Kiat How, who was guest of honour at the event, said: “Singaporeans continue to trust our local media, as many of you have remained dedicated, resilient and committed to the highest standards of journalism. You have pushed the boundaries of innovation, creating works that have captured the attention of your audiences.”

He was speaking at the Singapore Press Club’s 53rd Anniversary Press Ball, where the awards were presented.

Mr Jovi Ho, assistant editor at The Edge Singapore, received the CDL-Singapore Press Club Sustainability Journalism Award.

Mr Patrick Daniel, president of the Singapore Press Club, said: “We are happy to see winners from both the mainstream media and digital media, and across a range of media titles.”

The inaugural Telum Media-Singapore Press Club Rising Stars Young PR Professional Awards were presented to Ms Aginaya Mae Abbugao, account manager at The Hoffman Agency (Singapore), and Mr Saeful Hakim, senior manager at Rice Communications.

The Singapore Press Club Awards was launched in 2022 to commemorate the club’s 50th anniversary and recognise journalists and other media-related professionals who have excelled in their craft and made an impact with their work.

At the ball, 10 media veterans were inducted into the Singapore Media Industry Hall of Fame, which recognises individuals for their contributions to the industry in the course of their long careers.

Among them were two former journalists from The Straits Times: Mr Bob Ng, who was executive editor at the newspaper, and Mr Sia Cheong Yew, former associate editor and night editor.
