SINGAPORE – Singapore “strongly condemns” the terrorist attack in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the US on Jan 1, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Jan 4.

The ministry also advised Singaporeans visiting the US to exercise vigilance and look out for developments at the places they are heading to, in the local news. MFA added that Singaporeans should also heed the local authorities’ instructions.

The advisory comes after a

celebrating New Year’s Day before opening fire on the police.

The attack, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation has classified as a potential act of terrorism, left 15 people dead and 35 injured.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims, and we wish the injured swift recoveries. This attack is a stark reminder of the threat that terrorism continues to pose to all countries,” said the ministry.

“The Singapore Embassy in Washington, DC is in contact with the local authorities. Thus far, there are no reports of Singaporeans affected by the incident.”

Singaporeans visiting the US should register online with MFA so that the ministry can contact them in cases of emergency.

Those travelling abroad are also encouraged to buy comprehensive medical and travel insurance, MFA added.

Those who require consular assistance should contact the Singapore Embassy in Washington or the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission in the US, or the 24-hour MFA Duty Office line.
