SINGAPORE – Prepare for hot and wet weather in the first half of September as south-west monsoon conditions prevail. The localised short and thundery showers of late August are forecast to continue in the late morning and afternoon on several days in the first two weeks of September, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said in a weather advisory on Sept 2.

Sumatra squalls may also bring widespread rain and gusty winds on one or two mornings in the second half of the fortnight, the weatherman added.

As in late August, the mercury might rise slightly above 34 deg C on a few days, though daily maximum temperatures are expected to range between 33 deg C and 34 deg C. A few warm and humid nights might also be in store, with temperatures staying above 28 deg C, MSS said.

In the last two weeks of August, the daily maximum temperature hovered between 32 deg C and 34 deg C.

The highest temperature in that period was 34.6 deg C, recorded in Admiralty on Aug 19 and Pulau Ubin on Aug 31.

Most parts of the country recorded below-average rainfall in the second half of August, though Kranji Reservoir logged rainfall of about 110 per cent above average.

On Aug 23, a localised convergence of winds brought heavy, thundery showers to the north-west.

The daily total rainfall of 72.4mm recorded in Kranji that day was the highest rainfall recorded for the second half of August.

Tai Seng in the north-east was especially dry, with rainfall falling about 90 per cent below average in the same period.
