SINGAPORE – There are no reports of Singaporeans in Afghanistan affected by the earthquake, the Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sept 4.

Afghanistan was struck by two earthquakes last week, which killed at least 2,200 people and injured more than 3,300.

In its statement, MFA said Singaporeans are advised to defer travelling to Afghanistan, as per the existing travel advisory. This note, issued in September 2024, advises Singaporeans to defer all travel to the country in view of the situation there.

MFA on Sept 4 added that those residing there should remain vigilant, monitor the local news closely and eRegister with MFA immediately if they have not done so.

Singaporeans who require consular assistance should also contact the 24-hour MFA Duty Office on +65 6379-8800/8855 or e-mail

The ministry said that Singapore conveys its deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake.

The Singapore Government will contribute US$50,000 (S$64,500) as seed money to support the Singapore Red Cross’ (SRC) fund-raising efforts for humanitarian relief for vulnerable communities affected by the earthquake. SRC also announced on Sept 4 that it is pledging $50,000 to support the Afghan Red Crescent Society and its partners on the ground.

The most immediate needs include search and rescue support, emergency healthcare and medical supplies, food, clean water and restoring road access to reach

isolated communities affected by the disaster

.

To complement this, SRC has launched a fund-raising appeal. Members of the public may donate digitally via credit card

The first earthquake of 6 magnitude, one of Afghanistan’s deadliest in recent years, unleashed widespread damage and destruction in the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar on Aug 31, when it

struck at a shallow depth of 10km

.

A

second quake of 5.5 magnitude

on Sept 2 caused panic and disrupted rescue efforts as it sent rocks sliding down mountains and cut off roads to villages in remote areas.
