India and Pakistan exchanged heavy artillery along their contested frontier on May 7, after New Delhi launched missile strikes on its arch-rival in a major escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbours. New Delhi announced it had carried out "precision strikes at terrorist camps" at nine sites in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, days after it blamed Islamabad for a deadly attack on the Indian-run side of the disputed region. SINGAPORE - Singaporeans should defer all non-essential travel to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in India, and to Pakistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on May 7.

The ministry issued the travel advisory given the “volatile security situation between the two countries”.

“Travellers should exercise precaution, especially at the border regions between Pakistan and India,” it said, adding that those who are currently in the two countries should be alert and take steps to keep themselves safe.

These measures include avoiding large gatherings, monitoring local news closely, following the instructions of local authorities, and registering with MFA at
