SINGAPORE - Singapore will contribute US$100,000 (S$130,800) to support flood victims in Nepal.
The seed money will be given to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) as part of its public fund-raising efforts.
In a statement on Oct 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The contribution will support humanitarian relief efforts and the immediate needs of affected communities in Nepal.”
SRC said on Oct 10 that it would pledge an initial $50,000 to help the Nepal Red Cross Society’s relief operations, which include distribution, search and rescue, and providing shelter for those affected.
“Volunteers from the SRC are on standby to be deployed to Nepal to assist with recovery operations if the situation worsens,” it added.
Those who wish to donate to the fund-raising efforts can do so on SRC’s website or on Giving.sg
Donations via PayNow can be made to UEN “S86CC0370ERF1”, with “Nepal Floods” in the comments.
Monsoon floods have killed over 200 people in the Himalayan republic.
Whole neighbourhoods in Kathmandu were inundated after Nepal saw its heaviest rain in over two decades. The capital was reportedly cut off from the rest of the country after its highways were blocked by landslides.
The monsoon from July to September brings South Asia 70 per cent to 80 per cent of its annual rainfall, with experts saying that climate change has worsened its frequency and intensity.
The SRC also announced on Oct 10 that it is contributing US$50,000 to the Lebanese Red Cross in support of critical relief operations for the affected communities in Lebanon and Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Members of the public can contribute on SRC’s website or on Giving.sg
Donations via PayNow can be made to UEN “S86CC0370EFR2”, with “Middle East Humanitarian Crisis” in the comments.
In-person donations for both fund-raising efforts are accepted at the Red Cross House at 15 Penang Lane.
