SINGAPORE - The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has launched an appeal for donations to support relief and recovery operations in Myanmar and Thailand, after an earthquake on March 28 left more than a thousand people dead, injured or missing in both countries.
SRC said the fund-raising appeal would run from March 30 to May 31.
In a statement on March 30, SRC added that it also offered mental health support to Myanmar or Thai citizens in Singapore whose loved ones were affected by the quake.
A community event, described as a “walk-in safe space”, was held at Red Cross House in Penang Lane on March 30.
Ten SRC volunteers offered psychological first aid to the participants, and activities such as mindfulness crocheting and reflections were also conducted during the event. Food and drinks were provided, and there was Wi-Fi available for participants to make calls home.
“The event brought together Myanmar (people) and Singaporeans, many who came offering to help,” said SRC.

Volunteers were also on standby to provide information about a tracing service called Restoring Family Links, which aims to assist Singapore residents who are having difficulty contacting their immediate family members who have been affected by the disaster.

About 1,700 people have died in Myanmar, while there are at least 18 fatalities in Thailand. More than 3,400 people have been injured in Myanmar, and over 300 are still missing.
Donations to the Red Cross appeal can be made via credit card, PayNow, cheque or in person at Red Cross House during office hours.
Corporate and individual donors can claim 100 per cent tax deduction for their donations, said SRC.
Donations via credit card can be done on the Giving.sg website Red Cross donation portal
Cheques must be made out to the “Singapore Red Cross Society” and mailed to Red Cross House, 15 Penang Lane, Singapore 238486.
Donors should include their name and address, and indicate “Myanmar & Thailand Earthquake” on the back of the cheque.
