SINGAPORE – Former US president Jimmy Carter’s lifelong commitment to peace, humanitarianism and service left an enduring legacy on the global stage, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
In a Facebook post on Dec 30, PM Wong said Mr Carter deeply valued the role the US played in fostering peace and stability in this region, and Singapore joined the US in mourning his passing.
Mr Carter, the longest-lived former US president, died on Dec 29 at the age of 100.
In his post, PM Wong said of Mr Carter: “During his term as president, the US became an Asean Dialogue Partner in 1977. The following year, he attended the very first Asean-US Ministerial Meeting held in Washington DC.”
He added that Singapore’s founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, who was prime minister at the time, was impressed by Mr Carter’s command of the facts on Singapore and the Asean region.
PM Wong said: “He will be fondly remembered as a good friend of Singapore and Asean. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this time of loss.”
