SINGAPORE – The Singapore Flyer’s operations have been temporarily suspended after a technical issue was detected during a routine maintenance inspection.

The move is a “precautionary measure”, a spokesperson said on Sept 10.

However, shops and restaurants at the Singapore Flyer’s retail terminal will remain open.

“We are working closely with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to conduct the necessary inspection, repairs and rectification works,” the spokesperson added.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our guests and business partners.”

In response to queries, the BCA said on Sept 11 that the technical issue involved one of the flyer’s spoke cables.

A specialist professional engineer will be carrying out inspections and testing before ride operations can resume.

Updates will be put up on the Singapore Flyer’s website and social media platforms, said the spokesperson for Singapore Flyer’s operator Straco Leisure.

Officially launched in 2008, the Singapore Flyer, which measures 165m tall and has a diameter of 150m, has suffered breakdowns in the past.

In January 2022,

a technical issue caused it to be shut down

for almost three months. The attraction reopened on April 15 that year.

Operations were also suspended for four months after a technical issue involving one of the spoke cables was discovered in November 2019. All 39 customers on board the observation wheel then were evacuated.

In 2018, a technical issue forced the Singapore Flyer to be shut for two months.

The Straits Times has contacted Straco Leisure for more information.
