SINGAPORE - Minister for Home Affairs and Law, Mr K. Shanmugam, on Thursday (Feb 23) night, visited the fire scene at 23 Tuas View Circuit.
Earlier on Thursday morning, a huge fire broke out at ECO Special Waste Management, a waste management plant handling toxic waste, at around 6.15am.
It was put out after four hours and no casualties were reported, said Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
During the visit, Mr Shanmugam was given a first-hand account of the firefighting operation, including challenges encountered by the firefighters, by Lieutenant-Colonel Michael Chua, Commander of SCDF 4th Division.
He also met several firefighters who were at the scene conducting the damping down operation.
In a Facebook post, Mr Shanmugam commended SCDF and police officers on their firefighting efforts and efforts to ensure public safety.
"The fire could easily have spread. It was a chemical factory, lots of inflammables, and lots of other factories nearby. Our officers did extremely well, in fighting and controlling the fire," he wrote.
In particular, he commended the female commander of the first response team, Captain Shawn Tan.
He said: "She was on duty yesterday, spent all of today firefighting and will be on duty again tomorrow. When I asked her how she felt, she said it was a meaningful job! True professional."
He also wished the SCDF officer who was taken to hospital for heat exhaustion a speedy recovery.
