Sengkang MRT and LRT stations will be upgraded, with works expected to be completed by 2022, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday.

Changes include improved barrier-free access and new dual-speed escalators leading to the MRT and LRT platforms.

There will be an extra lift for the MRT, LRT and mezzanine levels of the Sengkang transport node.

LTA will also expand the current LRT train platform to create more space for commuters.

The tender for the contract is expected to be awarded at the end of the year.

The majority of enhancement works will be carried out during non-service hours to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

LTA will also ensure that a lift at Sengkang MRT station remains operational throughout the construction period.

The upgraded Sengkang MRT station will serve existing commuters, upcoming residential developments near the train station, as well as the Sengkang General and Community hospitals, which are set to open in the second half of this year.

Sengkang LRT opened in 2003 with the line's East Loop, and the North-East Line opened that same year.
