SINGAPORE - Some train commuters at Raffles Place MRT station on the morning of Sept 17 were greeted by the sight of water leaking from several ceiling panels.

In photos and posts on social media platform Reddit and technology forum HardwareZone, commuters who witnessed the situation, which occurred around 9am, described a “loud raining noise” as they stepped off North-South Line trains onto the station platform.

The liquid did not have any smell, said the eyewitnesses. Others said staff from SMRT, which operates Raffles Place MRT station, ushered commuters away from the platform level.

An image posted by Reddit user TheDoorDoesntWork showed several sheets of newspapers scattered across the wet floor that stretched the breadth of the platform from door to door.

When The Straits Times arrived at Raffles Place MRT station just before noon, water was still seen dripping from the ceiling.

The affected area had been cordoned off, with containers placed below the leaks to contain the water.

The escalators leading to the lower platform, as well as near the affected area, were also not operating at the time.

Commuter Maya Abdolah told ST: “Now the situation seems fine, but I’m afraid it could affect the commuters during the evening peak hour because this is a very busy station and people run on the platform. The affected area also seems quite large.”

Chef Haiqal Loveridge pointed out that there was a disruption on the same morning on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) and wondered about the state of Singapore’s public transport system.

“The fact that it happened here right in the heart of the Central Business District with tourists seeing the station in this state, it’s pretty sad,” said the 35-year-old.

ST has contacted SMRT for more information.

Earlier on Sept 17,

train service between Woodlands North and Bayshore stations on the TEL

, also operated by SMRT, was disrupted for about two hours.

This was the second train disruption in

less than 12 hours

– and the fifth on the MRT network in September.
