SINGAPORE – The body of a 35-year-old man was retrieved from the waters on Tuesday after police were alerted to a case of suspected drowning off Punggol.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic subsequently pronounced the man dead.
The police said investigations are ongoing and preliminary investigations do not suspect foul play.
Earlier, the police said they received a call for assistance at about 3.45pm on Sunday near Punggol Point Jetty, where the man was reported missing.
His disappearance triggered a search and rescue operation by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, Singapore Police Force and SCDF.
An artist, who wanted to be known only as Mr He, told Chinese-language news media Lianhe Zaobao earlier that he was walking past Northshore Plaza at about 4pm when he saw a large group of police and SCDF officers sweeping the area.
The 50-year-old said the authorities had cordoned off a section stretching from a park connector next to Northshore Plaza to the area near seafood restaurant The Punggol Settlement.
The authorities deployed a boat to comb the sea, as well as multiple fire engines and ambulances to the scene, he said, adding that many people had gathered to watch the operation.
A woman, who identified herself as the wife of a friend of the missing man, told Chinese-language daily Shin Min Daily News that her husband had agreed to go rafting with the man on Sunday. She was unsure why things went awry and did not elaborate on what had happened.
She told Shin Min she had arrived at the scene at about 4pm after receiving word of the incident and that her husband was being questioned by the police.
The missing man is a Singaporean, she said, adding that he and her husband are colleagues and friends who fished together.
She told Shin Min that the missing man’s wife arrived at the scene and spoke to the police, and other friends also rushed to the scene.
The police were seen speaking to a man on the shore next to an inflatable rubber raft after the incident, Shin Min reported.
