As MPs and Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen debated the issue of training safety in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in Parliament yesterday, the State Courts heard the case of a Singaporean who defaulted on his national service obligations apparently due to fears he had about getting injured.
According to the prosecution in the case, Zaley Cheng Xi Xiong, who had medical issues, was so afraid of sustaining injuries during NS training that he fled Singapore in 2014. He returned only in August 2017 after graduating from an Australian university.
