SINGAPORE - About 400 residents from Jurong East rolled up their sleeves on Saturday morning (June 18) and reached skyward for a sweet treat.

It was the mango season again, and the trees around the Yuhua Community Club (CC) were laden with fruit.

Residents, including 70 members of the Yuhua Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC), joined hands to pick the fruits, during the third annual Mango Harvesting Fruit Party organised by the CC.

Close to 1,000 mangoes were harvested in about one hour. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, who is MP for Yuhua, also chipped in to help.

The mangoes were taken back to the CC, where residents made dishes such as mango salad for lunch.

The annual event is to strengthen community ties and foster a kampung spirit in the estate, said Ms Fu.

This year was the first time IRCC leaders, made up of representatives from different faiths, took part.
