Kenneth Chow, six, could barely speak English when he arrived in Singapore two years ago from Indonesia, but is now fluent in the language, thanks to a programme by ReadAble. The volunteer group is part of national scheme ComLink, which provides proactive and integrated support to about 1,000 low-income families with children and who live in one-or two-room rental flats.

When Kenneth Chow, now six years old, arrived in Singapore two years ago from Indonesia, he could barely speak English, much less read or write in the language.
But today, the Primary 1 pupil is fluent in English and doing well in school here, said his mother Nurjana Kumala Sari, 36, an Indonesian cleaner.
