Programmes to give ITE grads on-the-job training in aviation

Graduates from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) interested in aviation will now have a chance to gain on-the-job experience and certification.

Two new SkillsFuture Earn and Learn programmes will be available to those who want to be passenger service agents and ground operations specialists.

This was announced yesterday by Senior Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo at the Aviation Open House, which showcases job and education opportunities in aviation.

The programmes are part of the Earn and Learn scheme, which pairs polytechnic and ITE graduates with employers so they can be mentored and given on-the-job training while they study for their industry-recognised qualification.

Besides the SkillsFuture programmes, Mrs Teo said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) also hopes to develop manpower for the air transport sector by looking into developing more high-skilled jobs, and deepening the skills and knowledge of workers.

"This roadmap for the future seeks to develop Singaporeans at all stages of their careers, with initiatives targeted at students, fresh entrants, and experienced aviation workers," she said.

For instance, current manpower-intensive jobs, such as baggage and cargo handling, will be redesigned to implement technology and automation. This will enable workers to acquire the new skills required to operate and maintain advanced equipment, which will aid career progression.

Mrs Teo said that CAAS will provide incentives to workers in the industry who continue to upgrade their skills. Opportunities to deepen their skills and pursue industry-relevant qualifications will also be offered.

Admission is free to the Aviation Open House, which will run at Suntec City convention centre until Saturday. About 10,000 people are expected over three days.
