SINGAPORE - Keppel Corporation made a $1 million donation to the President's Challenge 2018 on Saturday (July 7), as part of the company's 50th anniversary.

President Halimah Yacob, who received the donation cheque from Keppel chairman Lee Boon Yang at the Keppel 50 charity run on Saturday, said she was heartened by the company giving back to society.

"I hope that companies in Singapore will continue to give generously, not only with financial support, but also through volunteerism and sharing of knowledge and expertise," she said.

Initiated by the late president S R Nathan in 2000, the President's Challenge represents the coming together of people from all walks of life to help the less fortunate, it said on its website.

Earlier this year, President Halimah announced a new fund under the President's Challenge to support vulnerable groups through skills upgrading, capacity-building and employment.

On Saturday morning, 200 Keppel staff participated in a 50km relay run that ended at Keppel Bay.

Dr Lee said that even as some of Keppel's businesses face stiff headwinds in an uncertain business world, the company is committed to doing its best for its stakeholders.

"Our aim is also to do good as we do well. We are committed to making a positive impact on the community wherever we operate," he said.
