SINGAPORE - President Halimah Yacob was appointed patron of The Girls' Brigade Singapore on Saturday (Jan 27), during a ceremony held at the group's headquarters along Upper Serangoon Road.

She becomes the third patron of the uniformed organisation, after Mrs Mary Tan, who was appointed in 2011, and Mrs S R Nathan, who became the first patron in 2007.

The Girls' Brigade Singapore, which was formed in 1927, and is one of the oldest uniformed groups in Singapore, is a co-curricular activity for girls recognised by the Ministry of Education.

There are more than 90 companies in primary and secondary schools across Singapore.
