SINGAPORE – The WP’s Andre Low and Eileen Chong will take up Non-Constituency MP seats in the 15th term of Parliament, bringing the total number of WP MPs to 12.

In a statement on May 19, the Elections Department (ELD) said returning officer Han Kok Juan has declared the pair elected as NCMPs.

Mr Low, 34, had contested in Jalan Kayu SMC at the 2025 General Election and received the highest percentage of votes among opposition candidates who did not win, getting

48.53 per cent of the vote against labour chief Ng Chee Meng

The WP nominated Ms Chong, 33, to take the remaining NCMP seat.

She was part of its Tampines GRC team, which was the second-closest opposition slate, getting 47.37 per cent of the vote in

a four-cornered contest that the PAP won

.

On May 19, the WP said all of its MPs will carry on the party’s longstanding mission to represent the interests of all Singaporeans, hold the Government to account, and advance reasoned, principled debate in Parliament.

It added that it welcomes Mr Low and Ms Chong’s contributions in Parliament.

The ELD said Mr Han wrote to the WP’s Tampines team on May 9 and asked the group to determine among themselves by May 19 the candidate to be declared elected as NCMP.

The group informed him on May 18 of their decision to nominate Ms Chong, the ELD added.

The WP’s Tampines team comprised former Aljunied GRC MP Faisal Manap, along with four political newcomers – Ms Chong, Dr Ong Lue Ping, Mr Jimmy Tan and Mr Michael Thng.

They faced a PAP team that comprised Social and Family Development Minister Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State Koh Poh Koon, Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng and newcomers David Neo and Charlene Chen.

The NCMP scheme, introduced in 1984, guarantees a minimum of 12 opposition MPs in Parliament.

As there are 10 elected opposition MPs from the 2025 election, two unelected candidates from opposition parties will be NCMPs.

The WP had retained its seats in Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC and Hougang SMC in the general election.

Both Mr Low and Ms Chong were first-time election candidates.

Mr Low is a disputes lawyer-turned-staff product manager at a global financial technology firm.

He joined the WP in 2020 and was appointed secretarial assistant to Sengkang GRC MP Louis Chua.

Mr Low had initially been walking the ground in Tampines before being fielded in Jalan Kayu.

Ms Chong is a former diplomat who now works at Singapore-based charity Asia Philanthropy Circle.

She spent 6½ years with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including three years at the Singapore Embassy in Beijing during the Covid-19 pandemic.

She joined the WP in December 2024 as a volunteer.
