SINGAPORE – Leaders around the world have extended their congratulations to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and the PAP on their resounding election victory on May 3.

The US said on May 3 that the Trump administration looked forward to working closely with the newly elected government.

“For nearly 60 years, the United States and Singapore have shared a strong and enduring strategic partnership, and a commitment to a secure, free and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.

“We look forward to continuing to work closely with the newly elected government and Prime Minister Wong to strengthen economic growth and our bilateral defence and security ties, which benefit Americans, Singaporeans and others across the region.”

Conveying his “warmest congratulations”, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wished PM Wong and his team continued success.

“We are bound not only by geography, but by enduring ties of kith and kin. As we look to the future, our two countries are building a habit of deep collaboration at all levels – a vital foundation as we navigate profound challenges to global order and international trade,” Datuk Seri Anwar said in a May 4 Facebook post.

He added that both Malaysia and Singapore have the opportunity to make the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone a shining example of what neighbours can achieve, with conviction and shared purpose.

Singaporeans returned the PAP to power

with 65.57 per cent of the popular vote

in the May 3 General Election, a commanding swing from its 61.24 per cent share during the last polls in 2020.

Voters overwhelmingly endorsed the ruling party, which secured 87 of 97 parliamentary seats in an election that took place against a backdrop of global uncertainty and trade wars.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the “decisive victory” reflected the trust, stability and confidence Singaporeans have in the “strong leadership” of PM Wong and the PAP.

“I believe that the new government will continue its success to lead Singapore. I look forward to continuing and strengthening our partnership with Singapore under the leadership of Honourable Wong,” Mr Prabowo said in a post on X.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he looked forward to working even more closely with PM Wong to strengthen the excellent relations between the two countries, as Singapore and Japan celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.

In congratulating PM Wong on his “resounding victory”, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Singapore share a strong and multifaceted partnership, underpinned by close people-to-people ties.

“I look forward to continue working closely with you to further advance our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” he wrote in a post on X.

In a statement posted on its website, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said it is looking forward to continuing to deepen its cooperation with Singapore on various regional and global issues.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon noted that New Zealand and Singapore share a strong and enduring friendship, and said that he looked forward to celebrating 60 years of close ties later in 2025.

European leaders also expressed their congratulations, as European Council president Antonio Costa wished PM Wong and the new government “all the best for their mandate”.

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union greatly valued its “excellent cooperation” with Singapore.

“Our partnership is deepening, in trade and investment, and also defence, security, innovation. Because there is so much more we can do together,” she said in a post on X.
