PM Wong to make introductory visit to Philippines from June 4 to 5

SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will make an introductory visit to the Philippines from June 4 to 5, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on June 3.

PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister, is going to Manila at the invitation of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who will host an official dinner in his honour.

In a statement on June 3, the PMO said: “The visit reaffirms Singapore’s commitment to strengthening our excellent partnership with the Philippines and provides an opportunity for the leaders to exchange views on deepening bilateral ties, as well as regional and global developments.”

In a separate statement on June 2, the Office of the President of the Philippines said the visit reflects the warm and enduring ties between the two nations. It added that the two leaders are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on June 4 and are expected to discuss strengthening the relations between the Philippines and Singapore, as well as exploring opportunities for deeper cooperation across various sectors.

It said: “During the bilateral meeting, the two leaders will discuss key areas of cooperation such as health, climate change mitigation and civil service cooperation.”

They are also expected to exchange views on key political and economic developments in the region, reaffirming their shared commitment to regional stability and prosperity, according to the statement.

PM Wong will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal Monument – the tomb of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal – and receive a ceremonial welcome at Malacanang Palace, the official residence and office of the president.

PM Wong will be accompanied by Mrs Wong and Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Sim Ann, as well as officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the PMO. While he is away, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs K. Shanmugam will be Acting Prime Minister.
