SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be in Lima, Peru, from Nov 14 to 16 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) leaders’ meeting.
He will then travel to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit from Nov 17 to 20, said the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a statement on Nov 13.
PM Wong will also have bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries on the sidelines of both summits. His back-to-back trips mark the first time he will attend these major international meetings as prime minister. It will also be his first visit to Latin America in that capacity.
Other leaders, including US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, are also expected to attend both summits.
Singapore is part of the 21-member Apec, which includes major world powers such as the US, China and Russia. On the agenda at the Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be topics such as promoting trade and investment for inclusive growth, and the transition towards the formal and global economy.
PM Wong will take part in the Leaders’ Informal Dialogue, as well as a dialogue with the Apec Business Advisory Council, and the leaders’ retreat.
At the G-20 Summit, he will discuss the importance of multilateral cooperation in fostering growth, and the reform of global governance institutions for greater development impact.
He will also discuss energy transitions to meet collective net-zero ambitions and job creation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
Singapore is not a member of the G-20, which comprises 19 major and emerging economies, along with the European Union and African Union. However, it is regularly invited to take part in its meetings.
PM Wong will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and senior officials from the PMO and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry will also be part of Singapore’s Apec delegation, while those from the Ministry of Finance will be part of the G-20 delegation.
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, who is also Minister for Trade and Industry, will be acting prime minister in PM Wong’s absence.
