Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met the leaders of Kuwait, Malaysia and Indonesia on the sidelines of the 46th Asean Summit on May 26.

The summit, held in Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur, brought together Asean leaders for discussions. They will also have meetings with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China on May 27.

In a post on his social media pages, PM Wong said that he met the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah.

Singapore and Kuwait are marking 40 years of diplomatic ties in 2025.

Singapore appreciates Kuwait’s longstanding provision of religious education scholarships to Singaporeans, which began in 1980, said PM Wong.

He added that Singapore is also honoured to support the training of Kuwaiti civil servants, and looks forward to building stronger people-to-people ties and economic cooperation.

In a separate post, PM Wong said he met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Asean Summit. He congratulated Datuk Seri Anwar on chairing a successful summit, and described Malaysia as an energetic and effective Asean chair.

Both leaders took stock of bilateral issues and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to advance Asean integration efforts.

He added that he looks forward to welcoming Mr Anwar to Singapore later this week, when he will deliver a special address at the Shangri-La Dialogue. The event, widely regarded as Asia’s premier defence and security summit, will take place from May 30 to June 1.

Separately, PM Wong met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. In a post on his social media accounts, PM Wong said they discussed global and regional developments, stressing the importance of a strong and united Asean in “these turbulent times”.

He also noted that both countries look forward to closer bilateral cooperation, highlighting that the longstanding relationship between Singapore and Indonesia has served as an anchor of stability against geopolitical headwinds.

In a separate post, PM Wong shared that he met Chinese Premier Li Qiang on May 26, just before a gala dinner hosted by PM Anwar.

He said they had a good conversation, adding: “We exchanged views on regional developments and reaffirmed the strong ties between Singapore and China.”
