SINGAPORE - All 245 individuals who applied for political donation certificates ahead of the May 3 general election have been issued the forms by the Elections Department (ELD).

In a media statement on April 21, the ELD also announced that it had issued certificates of the Malay Community Committee to 42 eligible applicants, and certificates of the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee to 37 eligible applicants.

The ELD said on April 20 that it had

received 245 applications for political donation certificates

by the April 19 deadline. This means there could be as many candidates vying for the 97 seats in Parliament.

It is not uncommon for political parties to apply for additional or standby certificates.

In the 2020 General Election, the ELD received 226 applications for political donation certificates, although only 192 candidates eventually filed nomination papers to contest the 93 parliamentary seats.

Under Singapore’s election rules, all candidates are required to submit political donation forms, on which they must declare any donations received and affirm that the funds are permissible under the law.

These forms are necessary to obtain political donation certificates, which the Registrar of Political Donations will issue by the eve of Nomination Day.

Candidates must submit these certificates along with their nomination papers on

Nomination Day on April 23.

They are also required to have a proposer, a seconder and at least four assenters, all of whom must be eligible voters in the constituency being contested.
