SINGAPORE - Over the past week, a pernicious argument has taken root in some parts of social media and among self-styled activists in Singapore: Politicians here are opportunistically using the invasion of Ukraine - an event so remote as to be irrelevant to Singapore - to promote National Service and Total Defence.
On Monday (Feb 28), Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan laid to rest any illusion that this is about political scaremongering.
