SINGAPORE – Commissioner of Police Hoong Wee Teck, 62, will retire on Jan 6, after 10 years at the helm of the police force in a career spanning 38 years.
He will hand over the baton to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Policy) How Kwang Hwee, 46, said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Oct 6.
Mr Hoong was appointed commissioner on Jan 6, 2015. Earlier in his career, he held a raft of key positions, including director of police intelligence and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
He is also responsible for setting up the Anti-Scam Command and Emergency Response Teams.
As commissioner, he significantly beefed up the capabilities of the police force, MHA said.
“New technological capabilities have been built for crime fighting and prevention, including unmanned aerial vehicles for patrols and incident response,” it added.
A police camera network with video analytics in public places has also improved the success rate and speed at which the police have been able to solve crimes such as robberies, it said.
Mr How also played a key role in driving technological transformations in the police force, including the adoption of artificial intelligence to bolster investigation capabilities, and crime prevention and detection, MHA said.
In the past, he was CID director, deputy commissioner of investigation and intelligence, and senior director at the policy development division in MHA.
He also led the planning and execution of security operations for the Trump-Kim summit in 2018 anti-money laundering case in 2023
