SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong sent his condolences to the families of the victims of Typhoon Yagi, which has wrought death and destruction in many parts of northern Vietnam.

In a letter to Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Sept 11, PM Wong said he was deeply saddened to hear about the

tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by the typhoon.

He said: “On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and my sincere sympathies to all those whose lives have been affected.”

Singapore, he added, stands ready to support Vietnam during this difficult time, as a fellow Asean member state, strategic partner and close friend of Vietnam.

Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful cyclone to hit Asia in 2024, made landfall in Vietnam on Sept 7. At least 179 people have been killed, while 145 remain missing, according to government estimates.

Thousands of people living near the Red River in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi were evacuated on Sept 11 after its waters rose to a 20-year high and flooded the streets.

Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan also expressed condolences to the families of the victims in his letter on Sept 11 to Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son.

He said: “I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and wish for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.

“Please let me know if Singapore can be of any assistance in the relief efforts.”
