British Labour leader Keir Starmer led his party to a landslide victory at the polls on his way to becoming prime minister.

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lawrence Wong sent his “warmest congratulations” to Sir Keir Starmer on July 5 after the British Labour leader led his party to a landslide victory at the polls on his way to becoming prime minister.
In his letter, PM Wong said Mr Starmer’s premiership comes at a time of significant global challenges.
He said: “The British people have placed their trust in your leadership by giving you a strong mandate to guide the country through these challenging times.”
PM Wong added that Singapore and Britain are longstanding partners, with ties over two centuries old.
The two nations, he added, also share a deep friendship, underpinned by broad cooperation and strong people-to-people ties.
He said: “Our steadfast partnership is built on a mutual commitment to economic progress, and a shared respect for international norms and a rules-based multilateral order.”
He added that the launch of the Singapore-UK Strategic Partnership
Singapore and Britain, PM Wong said, are also looking to strengthen cooperation in areas like artificial intelligence, digital technology, renewable energy and sustainability as part of this partnership.
“These initiatives will create new opportunities for our businesses and peoples,” he added.
Singapore also values Britain’s continued engagement with the region, including as an Asean dialogue partner and a fellow member of the Five Power Defence Arrangements, said PM Wong.
“We can work together to advance our countries’ shared interests and address common challenges,” he added.
PM Wong in his letter wished Mr Starmer good health and every success, and said he looked forward to meeting him soon.
PM Wong also put up a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, congratulating Mr Starmer on his election win. He said: “SG and UK share a longstanding and historical relationship.
“Look forward to working with Mr Starmer and his team to strengthen our strategic partnership.”
In the British polls on July 4, the Labour Party won 412 seats out of a possible 650
Votes are still being counted in two more seats, with results expected on July 6.
Labour will now form the government for the first time since 2010.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak conceded defeat on July 5
After his election victory, Mr Starmer held a meeting with King Charles III in Buckingham Palace, before assuming the prime ministership.
