ArtScience Laboratory’s free workshops

The ArtScience Museum’s new learning centre, ArtScience Laboratory, is now open and offers free daily workshops, most of which are available on a walk-in basis. You can access the space at Basement 2 of the museum without an admission ticket.

Its hands-on programmes cover themes such as science and engineering, and sustainability. There are also mental wellness-themed sessions where you can learn the science and art of being calm and how to keep a journal, for example.

Other workshops will encourage you to bridge your inner artist and scientist through creative activities based on the works of multidisciplinary artists. When The Straits Times visited recently, young participants made clay figures of hybrid creatures inspired by Australian contemporary artist Patricia Piccinini’s artworks, which were on display at the museum from 2022 to 2023.

The ArtScience Laboratory features a Cubebot-inspired cushion that is large enough for adults to lie on.

The 320 sq m learning centre features child-friendly foam furniture that can be moved around, played with and sat on. A standout piece is the Cubebot-inspired cushion that is large enough for adults to lie on. The Cubebot, a puzzle in the form of a toy robot, is a hit on social media.

ArtScience Laboratory’s programmes are also available for school and corporate bookings, and it can host up to 90 participants.

Local children’s theatre production The Bird Who Was Afraid Of Heights is returning to the Esplanade for its third run, from Feb 28 to March 16, with Deonn Yang as the new director. It was previously staged in 2016 and 2018.

Recommended for families with kids aged between three and six, the show is adapted from the picture book of the same name, written by Farah Bagharib-Kaltz and illustrated by Eeshaun.

It follows two best friends, Eddie the mynah and Matt the rat, who live behind an old abandoned house. When Matt is captured by a crow, Eddie must face his fear of heights to save his friend.

“I hope children who watch the show will learn to be a little braver and try things they might be afraid of or things they didn’t think were possible,” says Yang. “We could be more supportive of our friends who may be afraid.”

Tickets to the 45-minute show at the Esplanade Theatre Studio cost $23 each. Audience members will be seated on the floor and children must be accompanied by an adult.
