Win Or Lose on Disney+

Pixar Animation Studios has so far produced television series that are spin-offs from its hit movies.

Notable examples include the four-episode Dream Productions (2024), which drew inspiration from Inside Out (2015) and its 2024 sequel; and Cars On The Road (2022), a nine-episode series built upon the popular Cars movie franchise (2006 to 2017).

But, Win Or Lose, debuting on Disney+ on Feb 19, marks Pixar’s first foray into original TV content. The series offers a story about a middle-school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game.

Each of the eight episodes focuses on a different character, offering perspectives from insecure kids to helicopter parents and even a lovesick umpire. Two 20-minute episodes will be released weekly.

Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter was reported as saying: “It’s not so much about softball as it is a comedy about love, rivalry and the challenges we all face in our struggles to win at life.”

Here is a heart-warming animated series to catch with your kids. Now streaming on Apple TV+, Goldie follows the adventures of its eponymous protagonist, a giant girl with a big heart, and her friends in the quaint town of Boysenberg.

Goldie’s friends include Teeny, a tiny girl who dreams of being bigger; Petey, a boy with a big imagination; and the Mayor. Goldie also has a frenemy, Mrs Petunia, an elderly woman who, despite her occasional grumpiness, possesses a heart of gold.

Inspired by Emily Brundige’s award-winning 2019 animated short film of the same name, the series spans 13 half-hour episodes.

Your children will learn to embrace their unique qualities and appreciate the differences that make them and others special.

Flying Cart Adventures bilingual book series

Flying Cart Adventures, an English-Chinese picture book series, takes your children on a journey to Singapore’s past.

Its three books explore bygone landmarks Wonderland Amusement Park, Van Kleef Aquarium and the National Library in Stamford Road. They do so through the eyes of Ming Ming and his grandmother, who collects cardboard for a living. At his whim, her pushcart becomes a magical cart that can fly them back to the 1980s.

These locations offer a nostalgic contrast to the Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium and National Library in Victoria Street that your kids are familiar with today.

They will also learn snippets of history at the end of each story. For example, the National Library in Stamford Road was opened in 1960 by Singapore’s first president Yusok Ishak.

Written by Clara Mok and illustrated by Alan Bay, the books also highlight the intergenerational bond between a boy and his grandmother.

Mok encourages kids to read the series with their grandparents. “I hope that the series will spark conversations between generations about the places and experiences in Singapore that helped shape our identity,” she says.

Buy the three books for $16.90 each or a bundle set for $44.70 from its publisher Child Educational’s website
