SINGAPORE – Users of internet service provider ViewQwest reported connection issues on the afternoon of May 31 on an outage tracking website, with reports peaking at more than 1,400.
Reports on Downdetector spiked at around 4.30pm at 1,491, following an earlier peak of 537 at 11.15am.
The number of reports decreased to about 30 or under from around 6pm.
The latest disruption had come after ViewQwest said on Facebook at around 3pm that its internet services were fully restored by 1.30pm after the earlier disruption.
The service disruption was caused by a major power outage at one of Equinix’s Singapore data centres, which impacted multiple service providers, a ViewQwest spokesman told The Straits Times.
The facility’s back-up systems also failed to activate as intended, resulting in service disruption for some ViewQwest users.
“We would like to stress that this incident is entirely unrelated to any previous service issue. It was triggered by an external infrastructure failure beyond our direct control,” said the spokesman.
ViewQwest is working with its data centre partner to investigate the root cause of the outage and reinforce preventive measures, he added.
Its hotline had also faced technical difficulties during the earlier disruption, ViewQwest said in its earlier Facebook statement.
ViewQwest said in a 6.37pm update on Facebook that the earlier disruption “was an isolated incident at the data centre level and is entirely unrelated to any previous service issues”.
More than 330 users have commented on the internet service provider’s Facebook post regarding the disruption, with users reporting connection problems in places such as Eunos, Mountbatten, Bukit Batok and Sengkang in the latest disruption.
The Straits Times has contacted ViewQwest for more information.
