SINGAPORE - Devotees who want to take part in religious rituals at the fire-walking festival must register online from Sept 4, said the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) on Sept 3.

The annual festival, also known as theemithi vizha, will take place at Sri Mariamman Temple in South Bridge Road on Oct 12.

Devotees who want to participate in religious rituals – paalkudam, angaprathachanam, kumbiduthandam, and walking on or around the fire pit – must register at

There will be no walk-in sale of tickets at the temple for any of these rituals, and online registration will end at 11pm on Oct 11, HEB said.

Paalkudam, angaprathachanam and kumbiduthandam can be performed from Sept 27 onwards.

The five rituals are performed by devotees to fulfil vows they have made.

Individuals taking part in the paalkudam ceremony carry milk pots as an act of devotion.

For the angaprathachanam, devotees lie on the ground with their arms outstretched and roll around the premises of the temple.

Devotees walk around the temple premises, prostrating in prayer every three steps of the way for the kumbiduthandam.

Finally, devotees walk across or around a fire pit in the hopes of having their prayers fulfilled by the goddess Draupadi Amman.

On Oct 12, the foot procession for male participants walking on the fire pit will start at Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Serangoon Road and end at Sri Mariamman Temple.

Devotees are encouraged to tune in to the live-streaming of the festival on the HEB YouTube and Facebook pages, HEB said.

For more information, devotees can call the Sri Mariamman Temple on 6223-4064 or visit the HEB official website.
