SINGAPORE – A hotel guest was taken to hospital after a fire broke out at York Hotel Singapore near Orchard Road on the morning of Aug 24.
In response to queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 21 Mount Elizabeth, which is the address of the hotel, at about 4am that day.

In a statement on Aug 24, Joyce Yao, York Hotel Singapore’s director of marketing communications, said a small fire broke out in a food preparation area in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant.
The restaurant is operated by a tenant, and is located on the second floor of the hotel’s Tower Block.
The hotel’s fire alarm system was activated at 4.04am, and the police and SCDF were immediately alerted, Yao said.
She said the SCDF arrived at 4.12am, and the fire was extinguished at about 4.20am.
The fire was confined to the food preparation area, which was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
During the evacuation, a guest suffered an ankle injury on the ground floor, and was taken to hospital for medical attention, Yao said.
The guest was discharged from the hospital at about 6.30am.
Since then, York Hotel Singapore has been in contact with the guest to provide the necessary assistance, Yao added.
After mandatory safety checks by the police and SCDF, guests were allowed to return to their rooms between 5.30am and 6.15am, Yao said.
The area affected by the fire remains closed while investigations are ongoing.
Operations at the Chinese restaurant have also been suspended until further notice.
There is no impact to the hotel’s overall operations, Yao said, adding that the establishment is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigations.
“We sincerely apologise to our guests for the disruption and inconvenience caused by the incident and evacuation.
“The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our highest priority, and we will continue to provide all necessary assistance,” Yao said.
An evacuated hotel guest told Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao that an announcement was made over the hotel’s loudspeaker at about 4am, instructing guests to evacuate the building.
He said he could smell smoke when he reached the lobby, but the smell dissipated quickly after the situation was dealt with.
He added that hotel staff provided drinking water to some guests during the evacuation, and informed all guests that breakfast service was free of charge that morning.
