SINGAPORE - A man died after a workplace fire involving gas cylinders broke out in Tuas on Friday morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at 21 Tuas Avenue 3 at about 9.05am and put out the blaze using a water jet.

The 38-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic, while a 43-year-old man was taken conscious to Singapore General Hospital.

About 40 people evacuated the premises before SCDF arrived.

A spokesman for the police said that they were alerted to a workplace accident at the location at about 9am.

The Straits Times has contacted the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) for more information.

The death comes three days after a

31-year-old Singaporean was killed in a workplace accident in Rifle Range Road.

A machine had fallen off a forklift and hit him, and the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A

62-year-old man was arrested

by the police under suspicion of causing death by a negligent act.

On Sept 1, MOM had called for a

six-month heightened safety period

that would last until Feb 28, 2023, after a spate of workplace fatalities.

As part of this heightened safety period, companies in higher-risk sectors such as construction and manufacturing are required to conduct a mandatory safety time-out to review safety processes.

If severe lapses are found following a serious or fatal workplace accident, companies will be barred from hiring new foreign workers for up to three months.
