SINGAPORE – A new academic imprint that aims to advance Chinese-language research in Singapore and South-east Asia was launched on Nov 16.
ThinkNanyang will focus on subjects related to the Chinese diaspora, including culture, society, history and philosophy. It was launched by Focus Publishing – an arm of SPH Media, which also publishes The Straits Times.
It also aims to establish a specialised platform to promote influential scholarly works and foster interdisciplinary discourse in the humanities.
An imprint refers to a distinct brand or division within a publishing house that focuses on a specific genre, market or type of book.
An advisory committee comprising prominent Singaporean and international academics will oversee a review process to ensure the publication of high-quality works.
The committee comprises Professor Wang Gungwu, Professor Wong Sin Kiong and Professor Ong Chang Woei from the National University of Singapore, Professor David Wang Der-wei from Harvard University, and Dr Ko Chia Cian from National Taiwan University.
Ms Lee Huay Leng, editor-in-chief of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group, said: “When we think about Singapore’s role in the world and its unique strengths, we should not view it purely through the lens of profit and loss.”
Ms Lee added that the Chinese Media Group has always believed it is more than just a news organisation and that it has a vital part in preserving Singapore’s cultural and historical ecosystem.
The first publication of ThinkNanyang, The Collected Works Of Lee Guan Kin (2025), is now available at leading bookstores and online at SPH Media’s e-commerce platform ZShop at zshop.zaobao.sg
