SINGAPORE – Growing up as an only child, psychotherapist Qi Zhai-McCartney, 43, knew that she wanted to have a large family.

The lack of a sibling felt especially acute while she was a young college graduate living and working in the United States. It was challenging managing her studies, a nascent career, and caring for her parents back in her home town in Harbin, China.
