SINGAPORE - Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development Koh Poh Koon has warned about a fake account in his name promoting items on Twitter.

"I wish to alert everyone to a Twitter account created by someone using my name and profile picture to promote items in my name," Dr Koh, who is also an MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, said on Facebook on Monday night (June 13).

Dr Koh added that he does not have a Twitter account, and that he would be making a police report.

He shared photos of the fake account, which showed tweets seemingly promoting an online coupon site and an education site.

It is not the first time that an MP has seen his name used in fake social media accounts.

A fake Facebook account using Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob's name surfaced in December last year.

The scammer said Madam Halimah was in trouble and needed money, and asked friends to transfer money to her.

A police report was made and Facebook was alerted to take down the account.

In December 2014, a Facebook account in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Zainal Sapari's name was set up to ask for money.
