SINGAPORE - More than 13,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were uncovered and seized from a lorry by immigration officers at Tuas Checkpoint on Feb 12.
The lorry was driven by a 26-year-old Malaysian man, who was attempting to smuggle them into Singapore, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on Feb 17.
“Glass jars” were declared as part of the lorry’s consignment, but an ICA image analyst detected anomalies in scanned images of the Malaysia-registered vehicle’s cargo during arrival clearance.
ICA officers checked and found 13,035 cartons and 9,768 loose packets of cigarettes concealed inside cardboard boxes lined with glass jars.
The case has been referred to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.
The ICA said in its statement that it will continue to tap data analytics and work with other agencies to prevent smuggling attempts into Singapore.
