SINGAPORE - To mark the Republic’s 59th birthday on Aug 9, ministers and MPs showed up at the Padang in their best red, white and printed outfits.
Many opted for floral prints in Singapore’s national colours.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Maliki Osman, who is also Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs, donned white pants and a collared shirt with prints of the Cymbidium flower, or better known as boat orchids. The shirt had a pop of green from the flowers’ leaves and red-pink from the flower petals.
Eagle-eyed followers of Dr Maliki’s Instagram page also spotted the word “Cymbidium” written on his shirt.
Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment, and Transport, sported a shirt designed by a local Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) student.
In his Instagram post on Aug 9, he said: “I am proud to wear a shirt designed by Tansii Mui, a third-year Nafa student. The design inspiration came from our island map and was painstakingly machine-embroidered by hand.”
The design also holds meaning – it includes Singapore’s landmarks such as Sentosa, Tuas Port, Woodlands and Changi Airport.
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat wore a shirt from The Singapore Shawl, a social enterprise founded by East Coast resident Shelley Siu.
“They create eco-friendly garments with motifs that highlight Singapore’s rich flora, fauna and culture, while at the same time supporting and empowering women. Always happy to see Singaporeans making a positive difference and caring for others,” he said in a Facebook post on Aug 9.
The Workers’ Party MPs – including Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh and chairwoman Sylvia Lim – turned up in red shirts matched with black pants, with the exception of Sengkang GRC MP He Ting Ru, who wore a red and white dress with floral prints.
Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, as well as Culture, Community and Youth, wore a knee-length dress with an asymmetrical design of red and white, along with red flats.
Ms Denise Phua, an MP for Jalan Besar GRC, also opted for a knee-length dress, but with a red sleeve and a floral red-and-white design.
Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Transport, as well as Sustainability and the Environment, chose the embroidered route, pairing a red ankle-length dress with a white inner layer. She also wore embellished coloured shoes.
