SINGAPORE – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer met Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Sept 1, and explored opportunities in technology and advanced manufacturing during a four-day visit to Singapore.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), in a statement on Sept 1, said that during the meeting with the US governor, PM Wong underscored the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership between Singapore and the US at both the federal and state levels.

He also welcomed Michigan’s interest in strengthening economic cooperation with Singapore, it added.

PM Wong and the governor also discussed US trade policies, people-to-people ties, and ways that Singapore and Michigan can deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, MFA added.

In a Facebook post on Sept 1, PM Wong welcomed the governor to Singapore. He said: “As a proud University of Michigan alumnus, I’m especially happy that Governor Whitmer and her team are here to explore opportunities in technology, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain resilience.”

PM Wong attended the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where he got his master’s in economics.

In his Facebook post, he said: “As a small, open and trade-dependent country, Singapore depends on strong partnerships around the world.

“The US is already our largest foreign investor, top trading partner in services, and third-largest in goods. Our cooperation at both federal and state levels reinforces Singapore’s position as a trusted global hub, and helps us stay competitive.”

PM Wong wished Governor Whitmer a fruitful visit, and said he looked forward to outcomes that will benefit the people of both countries.

The governor also met Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on the same day.

Dr Balakrishnan and the governor focused on how cooperation between Singapore and Michigan state can reinforce the broader relationship between Singapore and the US, said MFA.

Governor Whitmer, a Democrat, also met officials from the Economic Development Board, and took part in a roundtable discussion with Enterprise Singapore and Singapore companies operating in Michigan.

She also attended a reception for University of Michigan alumni in Singapore.

The governor, whose visit is from Aug 30 to Sept 2, is accompanied by representatives from the Michigan state government and the economic development, entrepreneurial and innovation sectors.
