SINGAPORE – The nation’s beloved Merlion statue located at One Fullerton will not be available for photographs from July 29 to Aug 2, as it undergoes cleaning and maintenance works.

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on July 5 said in a statement: “While these works are in progress, the main Merlion statue will be covered in scaffolding and will not be available for photo-taking.”

A sign will be put up during the period, and travel agents and tour guides will be informed in advance about the closure on STB’s Travel Agents and Tourist Guides Licensing System.

However, the smaller Merlion cub statue located nearby will still be available for photo-taking during those five days.

“We seek the public’s understanding as the works and barricades may cause some inconvenience,” said STB.

The iconic half-lion, half-fish statue, which spouts water, previously underwent repair works in 2023 from Sept 25 to Dec 13.

Standing at 8.6m tall and weighing 70 tonnes, the Merlion statue was originally located at the mouth of the Singapore River when it was unveiled in 1972 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
